Automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRS or AS/RS) are rail-guided vertical-mast crane machines that are designed to automatically store and retrieve unit loads (e.g. pallets) into high bay warehouses without human intervention. Automated Storage and Retrieval System (AS/RS) is a combination of equipment and controls that handle, store and retrieve materials as needed with precision, accuracy and speed under a defined degree of automation.
Follow is a classic flow chart of AS/RS working flow.
The system is able to cope with most of the features found in industrial settings like, for example, multiple aisles, non aisle-captive cranes or double-deep unit-load AS/RS.
